29th August 2021

We welcome you all today as we gather together for online worship.

Call to worship

Today, in this service, may we bring to God not only the words on our lips, but also the praise in our hearts. May we bring our honesty and bravery, our anxiety and fears, all that we carry in our hearts. May we meet with Jesus, who accepts us, flaws and all, with forgiveness and grace.

Reading Psalm 15

Psalm 15

Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary?
Who may live on your holy Hill?
He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous,
who speaks the truth from his heart
and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbour no wrong
and casts no slur on his fellow man,
who despises a vile man but honours those who fear the Lord,
who keeps his oath, even when it hurts,
who lends his money without usury
and does not accept a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things will never be shaken.

Song – Be still, for the presence of the Lord

A gathering prayer

Open our eyes, Lord, our ears and our hearts. May we be quick to see where you are at work, quick to listen for your word; quick to offer love and hope, and slow to judge.

Amen

Song – Break Thou the bread of life

Reading Mark 7 vv1-23

Mark 7 vv1-23

A prayer of confession

Unblemished God, forgive us when we adhere to laws that are not of you, when we criticise others because their ways are not our ways. Cleanse our hearts and make us pure. When we have not supported one another in love, or protected those that are vulnerable. Cleanse our hearts and make us pure. When we have corrupted your laws and gone our own way, or when we have not nurtured those in our families and communities, and let them go astray. Cleanse our hearts and make us pure. Help us to live as one community, bound together in love and grace. Help us to live alongside each other and be there for one another

Amen

Thank you that even with all our doubts and fears
and worries about the journey ahead,
you are there by our side.
Where else can we turn? To whom shall we go?
Thank you that you are our rock and our salvation,
our strength and our high tower.
Thank you that as we choose to go on this journey with you,
as we make decisions and plans,
you are there, gently leading and guiding,
always present.
Praise you, Lord, for your constant love and faithfulness.

Song – Be thou my vision

Prayers of Intercession

O God, who answers prayer,
we hear the words of Paul the apostle.
He exhorts us to pray
on all occasions
and with all kinds of prayers and requests.
We pray for communities that have seen tragedy.
For vulnerable people who struggle to face what life
throws at them.
May they be built up in your love and strength.

Lord, we pray in your Spirit.

We pray for people who suffer for their faith.
For ministers and evangelists who seek to spread your word.
For us all as we share the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
May they, and may we, be built up in your love and strength.

Lord, we pray in your Spirit.

We pray for people who feel bound
by chains of unemployment and poverty,
chains of disability or illness,
chains of sorrow.

Lord, we pray in your Spirit.

We pray for ourselves when we feel vulnerable.
May they, and may we, be built up in your love and strength.

Lord, we pray in your Spirit.

We welcome you all today as we gather together for online worship.

Call to worship

As we come to worship, are we hungry for God
or satisfied by all the comforts of our life?
As we hear God’s word, do we want to be fed
or have we had enough?
Jesus invites us to feast with him:
let us come, for all is ready.

Song – What a Friend we have in Jesus

A gathering prayer

Jesus, our living bread,
we have an appetite for you,
and we come wanting to feed on your word.
Jesus, you offer life to the world,
eternal life, raising us up on the last day.
Keep us hungry for you,
with the anticipation of a feast
of the finest food – food that brings life.

Amen

Song – I will sing the wondrous story

Prayers of Intercession

We pray for people who struggle with their lives;
for those for whom the chips are down
and everything feels like an uphill struggle.
We pray for all whose lives have been affected by tragedy.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
We pray for lawmakers and peacekeepers,
as they seek to make the world a better place;
for police, as they deal with challenging situations…
We pray for the work of hospices,
as they seek to bring a good end to life;
for staff in care and nursing homes,
who have the responsibility of looking after people
who are no longer able to care for themselves…
We pray for parents nurturing children;
for teachers;
and for the church’s role in the nurture
of the physically young and the spiritually young…
We pray for people living with addictions;for organisations that seek
to help them in their search for wholeness,
and to bring normality back to their lives…
We pray for ourselves,
that we will make the most of our God-given time,
and that we will live well and be thankful…

Communion

A gathering prayer for the communion table

Heavenly Father, we are reminded today that Jesus met with many people on different occasions.
He shared in simple meals and showed his love for all those present by comforting them, encouraging them and challenging them.
As we share in this meal, we thank you for his body and blood so freely given.
Give us the vision
to carry on the task he gave to each one of us,
to share not only what we have with others
but to spread the good news about his love for the whole world.

Amen

Prayer of repentance A moment to be quiet and to bring personal prayer to the Lord

1 Corinthians 11: 23-26 The Lord’s Supper recounted by Paul

Sharing of bread and wine Time to eat a portion of bread and then some juice in remembrance of the Lord

Sending out prayer

After being fed by you, Jesus the living bread,
send us out to feed others.
Now that we are filled with your Holy Spirit,
guide our hands as we offer your life to others.
Now that we have the promise of eternal life with you, Lord God,
give us your love to share with the world.

We welcome you all today as we gather together for online worship.

Call to worship

When we journey with God, anything is possible:

we are challenged to push our limits.
When we walk closely with Jesus, anything is possible:

we are reminded that everyone has their own story to tell.
When we welcome the Holy Spirit, anything is possible:

we are invited to share in the bread of heaven that always satisfies.

Song – O breath of life come sweeping through us

A gathering prayer

Lord God, you have the bread of life for the hungry
and living water for the thirsty.
We come hungry and thirsty for your word,
with a desire to know your will
and to love with your unconditional love.
Help us to be fed and to learn from you.

Amen

Song – Song As the deer

Prayers of Intercession

Lord God, there are so many people who need
the difference in their lives that only you can bring.
Lord, sometimes we feel so useless
when faced with all the needs of our world.

We forget the important part we play just by opening our lives to you,
praying to you, and being your hands and feet.

We pray today for our families, our friends, our peers, our teachers.

Help us to share
through our prayer
and through our care.

We pray for everyone who has helped us grow closer to you;
for our church family, and our ministers.

Help us to share…

We pray for our community, the world in which we live and work and have our being.

Help us to share…
We pray for people who feel they have nothing to share, nothing even to live for; the homeless, prisoners, people at the end of relationships, the sick and those who mourn.

Help us to share
through our prayer
and through our care.

Amen

Lord, I acknowledge before you
that often I can be like Peter:
hearing your word but going off on my own track,
not wanting to see your path, especially if it looks rough.
Forgive me, Lord,
and set me on your path.

Lord, I acknowledge before you

Forgive me, Lord,
and help me to take up my cross.

Forgive me, Lord,
And help me to follow you.

Prayers of Intercession

We pray for people who struggle with their faith:
through self-doubt,
through difficult circumstances,
through bad things happening,
through being led astray,

We trust you, Lord, to answer our prayers.
Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory.
Your will be done, O Lord.

We pray for people who feel in the dark,
locked in a situation where they can find no answer,
that they might come to understand
that you are the key to everything they need.
We trust you, Lord, to answer our prayers.
Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory.
Your will be done, O Lord.

We pray for ourselves:
when we are in difficult situations,
when we try to unlock doors that aren’t ours to unlock,
when we don’t focus on the kingdom,
when we don’t share our story.
We trust you, Lord, to answer our prayers.
Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory.

A version of Isaiah 55.1-5 for one, two (or more) voices to say aloud

Voice 1: The Lord says this: Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;
Voice 2: and you that have no money, come, buy and eat!
Voice 1: Come, buy wine and milk
Voice 2: without money and without price.
Voice 1: Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
Voice 2: and your labour for that which does not satisfy?
Voice 1: Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good,
Voice 2: and delight yourselves in rich food.
Voice 1: Incline your ear, and come to me;
Voice 2: listen, so that you may live.
Voice 1: I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
Voice 2: my steadfast, sure love for David.
Voice 1: See, I made him a witness to the peoples,
Voice 2: a leader and commander for the peoples.
Voice 1: See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you,
Voice 2: because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.

Lord of history, Alpha and Omega- beginning and end, source of creation and giver of life, we praise and worship You! You are Holy, and worthy of all praise….all of creation reflects Your power and magnificence, and we join with all Your creatures to give You the glory due to Your name!

Prayers of response and intercession

Lord our God, have mercy; hear and answer prayer

May we have courage, Lord, to share the hope we have in You. Whatever the circumstances, however hard the pain of loss or sickness, may we with gentleness and respect offer to others the cup of living water, and the Bread of life, which we have received from You

Lord our God, have mercy; hear and answer prayer

May we have the humility Lord, to recognize our share of fault in the divisiveness of racism. May we be willing to listen to the hurts of others, may we be open to seeing things differently, may we become champions of change to make the world a more loving, just, equal and accepting place for everyone- may we be changed Lord by Your Spirit making us new

Lord our God, have mercy; hear and answer prayer

May the leaders of the nations be guided by Your Word and Spirit, Lord. In the many pressing and difficult problems that nations are facing, may there arise a new desire to collaborate for the common good. May this year become a turning point in history, when past enmities and selfish systems are left behind, and fresh understanding and compassion may prevail, and justice flourish

Lord our God, have mercy; hear and answer prayer

May Your healing power bring wholeness to bodies racked by Covid and other diseases, may tired medics and carers find rest and refreshment, may broken hearts experience Your touch of restoration, and find hope in Jesus our Saviour, and Lord, may this pandemic virus abate

Lord our God, have mercy; hear and answer prayer

May we offer now the prayers and deep groans of our hearts, for Your church to re-emerge as a vital bearer of good news, for our families, friends and neighbours to begin to thirst and hunger as never before for salvation, for the coming of Your Kingdom, Lord, in many a heart, all around the world….. in Jesus’ name we pray
