1st August 2021

We welcome you all today as we gather together for online worship.

Call to worship

We come with our curiosity and questions.
We come seeking answers.
We are grateful for our daily bread,
but we yearn for the bread of eternal life.
Let us seek to be fed and filled
with God’s life and love.

A gathering prayer

Lord God, giver of life,
you bless us with all we need –
and with so much more.
Keep us from being so focused on physical needs
that we neglect our spiritual food.
Feed us with your word,
satisfy us with your presence,
and strengthen us by your Spirit –
that we may share your eternal life.

Amen

A prayer of adoration

Merciful God,
we thank you that you are to be trusted,
that you are faithful and provide for all our needs.
When we feel alone in the desert,
that is where we meet you.
In the wilderness of our lives,
we can turn to you and know that you will sustain us.
We worship you,
and we thank you that in you there is always hope.

Sermon - by Les Noble

A prayer of thanksgiving

Thank you, Lord, that we can trust you in all things.
Even when we don’t understand,
when we feel lost and alone,
we can trust you.
When we wander in the wilderness,
thank you that you are there by our side,
that you reach out and touch us
with outstretched, open arms.
Thank you, Lord, that we are safe with you.
For you provide all we need,
that which is ‘on earth’ and that which is eternal.

Amen

Song – I, the Lord of Sea and Sky

Prayers of Intercession

Heavenly Father, giver of all good gifts,
we pray for all people who willingly use their time and gifts
in the service of others.

We pray for all who set up and work in charitable organisations:
bless them as they so freely give of their time and talents.

We pray for people who work together to bring healing,
for all who work in hospitals, homes, the community:
bless them as they bring blessing to others.

We pray for those who dedicate their lives to serving God
in religious orders and communities:
bless them in their gifts of prayer, hospitality and service.

We pray for people with the gift of words,
for teachers, writers and communicators:
bless the seeds that they sow.

We pray for those who don’t feel as if they have a gift,
or feel as if it goes unnoticed:
bless them with the knowledge that they matter to you.

We pray for our church as a welcoming community,
constantly being built up by our love for you.
Bless us, Lord.

Amen

Song – I want to serve the purpose of God

A sending out prayer

As we seek to do what you want, Lord,

We welcome you all today as we gather together for online worship.

Call to worship

Let us bring ourselves to God,
whatever our age and gifts.
Let us prepare to share in worship,
giving thanks for all that God shares with us.
Let us open our hearts and minds
to know more of God’s unconditional love and care,
and be ready to share it with others.

A gathering prayer

Lord of all creation, giver of life,
we offer ourselves to you.
Teach us how to give ourselves to others,
generously and wholeheartedly,
sharing who we are and what we have.
May we learn to share all the world’s resources,
so that everyone has enough
of the good things that you provide.
May we all rejoice in your goodness.

A prayer of confession and an Assurance of forgiveness

With our time and with our money:
forgive us, Lord, when we have not been generous.
In helping others, and being hospitable:
forgive us, Lord, when we have not been generous.
When we have been blessed with so much:
forgive us, Lord, when we have not been generous.
When we could have gone the extra mile and shared what we have:
forgive us, Lord, when we have not been generous.
In using our resources, gifts and talents:
forgive us, Lord, when we have not been generous.
Most generous God,
help us to be more like you.

Amen

Assurance of forgiveness

God, you forgive us when we make mistakes,
when we have not shared what you have given us.
We come to the cross knowing that we are healed and forgiven,
and given a second chance to be the people you call us to be.

Amen

Prayers of intercession

Response after each bidding:
Lord, we pray
that they/we might be rooted and established in love.

We pray for the homeless,
that they will have opportunities to find a place to stay,
and to get back their sense of self-worth…

We pray for the unemployed,
that they will have opportunities to gain necessary skills,
and not feel that society doesn’t care…

We pray for anyone in our congregation
going through hard times;
help us to help them, and to show them your love…

We pray for anyone who is sick or suffering,
anyone feeling withered
or drained of the life blood they need…

We pray for children/people
coming into membership of our church family,
that they may quickly feel welcomed
and feel a sense of belonging…

We pray for anyone who does not know your love,
that you will bring them into contact with a branch of your tree.
Lord, we pray
that they might be rooted and established in love.

Amen

Song – Brother Sister Let me serve you

A sending out prayer

Lord, help us to remain thankful for even the simple things.
Keep us focused on your loving, generous nature,
so that we can freely share what we have and who we are.
Let us be cheerful givers and humble receivers,
that all may have enough and be satisfied.

Thank you, Lord, that you always had time for people.

Thank you that you are kind and caring
and lavish your love upon us.
Your self-giving love has set us free

Prayers of Intercession

We pray for people of other cultures who live among us.
Thank you for the richness that they can bring to our lives.

We pray for our fellow citizens of earth and heaven.

We pray for people who feel excluded for reasons of race, culture, colour,

We pray for our fellow citizens of earth and heaven.

We pray for countries at war, for the people who suffer,
perhaps not even understanding what the fighting is all about.
Bring them hope, Lord.

We pray for our fellow citizens of earth and heaven.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called the children of God.
We pray for those who deliberately go into danger to negotiate for peace,
and for ourselves that we might bring God’s peace to our neighbours.

We pray for our fellow citizens of earth and heaven.

We pray for new communities being built up around us.

Theme: Jesus sends out the disciples.

A gathering prayer

Lord God, King of the universe,
we thank you for sending your Son, our Saviour,
as a helpless and vulnerable baby,
dependent on the love and care of flawed human beings.
As we come to worship,
may we make ourselves vulnerable –
open to receive more of your power, mercy and love –
so that we can share that with others,
when we are sent to serve you.

Amen

Song – Come, now is the time to worship

A prayer of confession and an Assurance of forgiveness

We bow before you, O God,
and we confess that we have let you down.
We have turned away from you and gone our own way.
We have allowed material things to dominate our lives,
and to occupy our minds.
We are sorry, and we lay everything at your feet.
We are sorry that we overcomplicate everything.
Help us to learn how to be still and know that you are God.
Help us to seek simplicity, to slow down and not to hurry,
to require nothing more than what you give,
and to fear being vulnerable,
so that we can be complete in your presence.

Amen

Assurance and forgiveness

esus Christ, you died and rose again
that we might be released from all the worldly things
that weigh us down.
Thank you that we are forgiven,
that our chains are gone,
and we have been set free to serve you once again.

Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and forever.

Amen

Sermon - Andy Vail (to be uploaded)

Song – One shall tell another

Prayers of Intercession

Lord, just as you sent out your disciples of old to share the Gospel, we pray today for all people who serve in the field of mission, at home or abroad. For all those in ministry and leadership within the church. For all those making themselves vulnerable by sharing of you.

Merciful God sufficient, we lift our prayers before you.
Strengthen and protect your people sharing the Gospel.

We pray for the conflicts and tensions raging throughout the world – hatred, bombings, corruption. We pray for all those caught up in such situations. And for the people working to bring about reconciliation.

Merciful God sufficient, we lift our prayers before you.
Diffuse hatred and bring peace to the world.

We pray for all countries struggling to cope with the pandemic due to lack of resources and vaccines. For India coping with another epidemic. For those everywhere who are sick; be it in mind or body. For those who put their own lives at risk to help save others. For the bereaved.

Merciful God sufficient, we lift our prayers before you.
Restore health, comfort and console.

We pray for those in our community who may have lost their jobs due to the pandemic or have been furloughed and are worrying about rent arrears. Or their future, as furlough begins to wind down. For all those living on the streets with only a cardboard roof over their heads.

Merciful God sufficient, we lift our prayers before you.
Bring reassurance; transform lives.

When the disciples were sent out, they were instructed to take no food with them. We pray for all people who live each day not knowing where their next meal is coming from. For all those who rely on aid or food banks to put a meal on the table.

Merciful God sufficient, we lift our prayers before you. Feed and nourish those in need.

Lord, in you we have freedom. We pray for our Prime Minister, the government and all advisors as they deliberate on lifting restrictions as we head to what society has dubbed ‘Freedom Day’.

Merciful God sufficient, we lift our prayers before you.
Give wisdom and guidance in all things.
May all people know true freedom in you.

Amen

Song – Go forth and tell

A sending out prayer

Lord, you sent your disciples into the world
to share your word with those in need –
may we approach this coming week with a similar desire.
You sent them carrying little but trusting much –
may we live this week with a similar attitude.
May our lives be less about us and our needs,
and more about you,
and your love and care for all people
in all places and circumstances.
May we love as you love.
We ask in your name.

Amen

Lord, may the truths of your kingdom be our strength
God of love and wisdom,
in our prayers today we bring to you
the nations of the world and their leaders
amid growing tensions, accusations and mistrust.
We give thanks
for those pooling their resources to find a vaccine for the corona virus;
for those offering sanctuary to refugees.
We remember and pray for those countries where we have family and friends,
and all those places whose suffering touches our hearts.
Lord, may the truths of your kingdom be our strength.

We pray for those industries hardest hit economically;
for all who are struggling with self-worth after losing their jobs;
for young people applying for university;
for those applying for benefits;
for charities struggling to cope with increased demand and reduced income.
Lord, may the truths of your kingdom be our strength.

We pray for churches and places of worship
as they welcome congregations back;
for courage as they encounter new challenges
and joy as they embrace new opportunities.
We pray for one another as we reflect on the parables and live out our faith.
Lord, may the truths of your kingdom be our strength.

We pray for those heading to the coast this summer for days out and holidays;
for safety on the roads, on the beaches and in the sea;
for those who work in the emergency services;
for lifeguards and lifeboat crews.
We pray that everyone would respect the environment
and we pray for those who collect litter.
We pray too for those unable to get away or take a break.
Lord, may the truths of your kingdom be our strength.

And we pray for those who are ill,
those in hospital and those at home;
those awaiting operations and treatment;
and those receiving palliative care.
We remember those who have died,
and pray for those who are grieving –
especially those who were unable to gather to comfort one another.
Lord, may the truths of your kingdom be our strength.
In Jesus’ name we pray.

Loving God, hear our prayer
Loving God, we pray for your world,
so imperfect and yet so rich and so diverse.

We pray for those places where humanitarian aid
is being distributed amid violence, fear and power struggles…
for volunteers, medical staff, peacekeepers, reporters
and all who risk their lives to help others.

We remember those who continue to be affected
by the attack at the maternity hospital in Iraq...
for the people of Yemen, and Syria...

We pray too for those places where landmines
still lay in the crops of fields, in villages,
in places where children and communities
live and work and go to school

Loving God, hear our prayer.

We pray for discernment and wisdom
around the use of social media.
We give thanks for those who use it for good –
to fundraise, to highlight injustice, to share good news
and to keep in touch with family and friends;
but we also pray protection from, and for a change of heart for,
those who use it to incite hatred, to bully and abuse,
those who are predatory,
and those who initiate financial fraud and scams.

Loving God, hear our prayer.

We pray for our relationship with creation,
and we give thanks for birds and wildlife,
and those green spaces that inspire and nurture us;
but we pray also for those who live in places devoid of colour,
for all caged by their surroundings;
we pray for an end to practices that are cruel and inhumane,
and we pray for the welfare of all animals and creatures,
and for wisdom in our stewardship of the earth.

Loving God, hear our prayer.

We pray for the family of the nations,
for our own families and for our church family.
Where there is division – bring reconciliation.
Where there is mistrust – bring healing.
Where there is opportunity – bring courage.
Where there is a shared dream – bring joy.
Where there is discouragement – bring hope.

And, amid all the muddle of the best and the worst of humanity,
bring your grace, your love and your truth
We ask these things in Jesus’ name.
Loving God, hear our prayer.

God of all seeds and all stories,
we pray for the wisdom to apply the truth of Jesus' parables
to our own lives

and this community where we serve you.
May we see you, may we hear you, may we know you care.

In the world, we pray especially
for places where climate change has brought drought…
for the places where it has brought floods …
for those whose crops have been scorched…
for those whose livelihoods have been washed away.
We pray for the people of Japan –
for those caught in the heavy rains there –
and for the people of Australia
and their wildlife endangered by the forest fires.
We pray too for those in our own country
who face continual upheaval and heartache through repeated flooding.
May we see you, may we hear you, may we know you care.

We pray for those whose life's seeds
are being choked by anxiety, poverty and hardship…
for those who have lost their jobs…
for those unable to feed their families
or to pay their mortgages and rent…
for those living without basic facilities.
We pray for those given hope by the emergency budget
and for those who feel hope-less
and for foodbanks and charities that try to help all who are struggling.
May we see you, may we hear you, may we know you care.

We pray for those unable to thrive because of illness…
and those denied the opportunity
to plant the seeds of their dreams in fertile soil...
for those hospitalised with Covid-19…
for those whose journey to recovery is long , slow and painful…
for those who nurse them…
for those who love them…
for those whose treatment has been put on hold…
We pray for those robbed of the opportunity to go to school,
for children in war zones, those in refugee camps,
those who have to work to find their daily food.
May we see you, may we hear you, may we know you care.

And we pray for those whose seeds are watered by their tears...
those grieving the loss of someone close to them…
those who feel forgotten…
those who are neglected…
those who are victims of injustice, abuse, or cruelty…
May they – and all in any kind of need today – see you, may they hear you,
and may know you care.
Amen.

so we pray in his name:

for the people of the USA as they mark the anniversary of their independence;
for discernment for those who will vote in the presidential election in November
and for integrity for those who are standing;
for healing where injustice and racism have caused great pain and division
and for courage and unity where changes are beginning to be made;
for the nation as a whole as the rate of unemployment and the death toll continue to rise.
To you, God of love, we entrust our prayers

We pray for all entrusted with the gift of teaching children and young people;
for those who struggle to learn and for those denied an education;
We pray for more resources, more opportunities, more equality.
To you, God of love, we entrust our prayers

We pray for all who care for those with serious mental health issues;
for those who work with patients who potentially pose a threat to others
and those who feel bowed down with their responsibilities,
who are struggling under the weight of the decisions they have to make;
for those with family or friends who are depressed,
and for all those engulfed by mental turmoil.
To you, God of love, we entrust our prayers

We pray for the people of Hong Kong, of Tibet and for the Chinese Government;
for the people of Israel and Palestine and their governments;
for all places where in the past there has been violence,
where today there is unrest
and where the future is full of fear and mistrust.
To you, God of love, we entrust our prayers

We pray for wisdom to learn from, and to act on, the mistakes of the past –
as a community and as individuals.
Where there have been disappointments may we learn courage.
Where there have been setbacks may we learn resilience.
Where there has been division may we learn generosity of spirit.
Where there has been self-centredness may we learn humility
To you, God of love, we entrust our prayers

We pray for churches throughout the world,
that we may learn new ways of sharing the gospel.
We give thanks for the vision and compassion, the integrity and faithfulness
of our national and international church leaders.
We pray for all leaders and pastors in our local church families.
We pray too for those who have been damaged by religion,
for one another in our daily encounters,
and for those we hold in our hearts who we would love to see come to faith.
To you, God of love, we entrust our prayers
in Jesus name.
Amen.

Song - It is well with my soul

Dramatic Reading Matthew 11.16-19,25-30

Song - I heard the voice of Jesus say

Sermon - Learn from me

A reflective prayer

Lord, sometimes I feel as if I’m on a fast train.
Life rushes by and I don’t have time to pause.
Lord, I want to take time to see the view
that your wisdom, through Jesus, gives me;
to come to you in prayer,
expecting far more than I could ever believe possible.
Bless me with your presence, Lord.
Amen.

Song - Will your anchor hold

A sending out prayer

Jesus has called us to come to him
and blessed us with his richness.
Now he sends us out into his world,
to make sure people see him,
and listen to him, through us.
What a responsibility, what a joy, what a privilege.
We are yours, Lord. Use us as you will.
Amen.
