We welcome you all today as we gather together for online worship.

17th October - The visit of Phil and Louise Proctor

Call to worship

Let us come together to be still,
to be known, loved, and held by God our creator,
to be thankful for all that God gives us,
to be healed and restored,
that in our worship today
joy and gladness may refresh and renew us

Song - Cornerstone

A prayer of praise and thanksgiving

Thank you, Lord God, that in your kingdom things are wonderfully topsy turvy, and we are all in this together.
Thank you that to do your will we must become servants,and we are all in this together. Thank you that when we follow Jesus, however little we think we have to offer, we can all minister to each other, and we are all in this together.
Thank you that you know what we need.
You came to earth to serve and build up your followers, and we are all in this together. We thank you for our ministers and church community, all who help us to find our place in your community, and we are all in this together.

Amen

Prayers of intercession

Lord, we pray for those who have given their lives to serve –
whether on far-off mission fields or just around the corner, pouring out love and compassion on those you have placed in their care and in their lives; may they know your strength, especially when they are weary or overwhelmed.
Be their refuge, O God, and give them all they need for each day.

Lord, we pray for those who, in their vocations and workplaces, are in a position of caring for others in tangible ways – looking after the sick and the lonely, providing housing or advice, being at the other end of a phone, transporting those who cannot get around easily.
We thank you for them, and ask your blessing on them.
May they be provided with the resources to do their jobs well.
And we pray that those who are in supervisory positions might have wisdom and awareness of the needs of those who work for them.

Lord, we pray for all of us here, that you may lead us in our own service of others, reminding us of the deep motivation of Christ’s love, and giving us a heart for your world.
In Jesus’ name we pray.

Amen

Prayers of intercession

Heavenly Father, we thank you for all who are prepared to serve you on the mission field,
We pray for Phil and Louise and thank you for all that they have done while serving you in Bangladesh.
Now that their time with BMS is coming to an end, guide them to where you want them to be.
Help them to be aware of your will and bless them in this new phase of their lives.
Bless them and provide for their physical needs
And enrich them spiritually so that they will be able to serve you wherever you take them.
In your name we pray.

Amen

A sending out prayer

Lord, take our thoughts (touch head)
and turn them into prayer. (hands together)
Take our prayer and turn it into love. (hands over heart)
Take our love and turn it into life.
In Jesus Christ (right index finger touches left wrist; then left index finger touches right wrist)
today and every day. (palms face up in offering)

Amen

Prayers from BMS I Will Stand

Pray for courageous Christians sharing good news in hard places

“I miss my family a lot… But I pray that they would accept me as I am, just as I accept them as they are.”</ br></ br> - Z, North Africa

Pray for people who have been rejected by their families because they have chosen to follow Jesus. Pray that they experience the unconditional love of God. Pray that they would find strong Christian communities. And pray that their families would accept them and reconcile with them.

“Out of the 30 families living here, 22 families have come to know Jesus, and I pray that one day it will become an entirely Christian village.”

- K, Asia

Pray for church planters in Asia who are facing persecution because of their faith. Thank God for the many, many people they are reaching with the gospel, and for the new house churches they have formed. Pray for protection for the church planters and for the new believers. Pray for God to soften the hearts of those who want to harm them.

“Pray for me to serve God in the right way, wherever he wants.”

- J, Middle East

Pray for isolated Christians. Pray that they would find other believers who can encourage them, whether that is face-to-face or through social media. Pray that they would find ways to faithfully follow God, even when they have to live out their faith in secret.

“Pray that God gives us the wisdom and patience to answer the questions of those who come to us, because sometimes they are really angry… ”

- Z, North Africa

Pray for BMS-supported ministries reaching out to people who are hostile to the gospel. Pray for people to have wisdom to know when to speak and when to be silent. Pray that God would give them the right words to say. And pray that they would see many people come to know Jesus.

“I have a big desire to preach the gospel because of where I am living, because my family and my community are not Christian. So please pray for me, for the anointing of the Holy Spirit.”

- M, Asia

Pray that, through the ministries of BMS-supported believers across the globe, thousands of people will experience whole-life transformation. Pray that, as Christians living in hard places seek to share the gospel in word and deed, people will experience the love of Jesus for the first time, and that it would transform every area of their lives.

A Prayer of Confession

Lord God, sometimes we find it so hard to come to you, to confess our sins to you. Sometimes our relationships, with you and with each other, aren't right. It can be all too easy to let other people, or things, keep us away from you. And sometimes we try to keep others away. Please forgive us, Lord, and teach us what truly matters to you.

An Assurance of Forgiveness

God takes us in his arms and blesses us. God loves us and protects us. When we come to God in a true spirit of repentance, from the littlest “Sorry” of the youngest child, to the biggest “Father forgive” of those old enough to know better, God hears us and welcomes us with open and loving arms. We are blessed.

Prayers for BMS partners and the NHS
RBC prayer time for our link BMS missionaries (Sunday, 25th October 2020)

As a poet has written:
How do you live through a siege?
How do you guard your heart and keep hope
Amid violence, hatred, injustice and fear?
You pray
Lord, we pray today for our BMS link missionaries who continue to live separated from the peoples in Nepal and in Bangladesh to whom you have called them.
We remember Simon and Wendy Hall, currently in the USA and rejoicing in the birth of James. We know they long to resume their schools’ ministry in Nepal and yet rejoice with them that in this time of school closures, teachers are managing to find moments for essential online training. Thank, too, that as they put it, ‘our Nepali church has not stopped to sulk at its own hardships’, and we lift that country before you, the authorities working to contain the virus and the Halls preparing to return as You give them leave to do so.
Thank you, too, Lord for Louise and Phil Proctor. Thank you that in this time of enforced ‘exile’ from Bangladesh in the UK, they are able to help at Dumfries Baptist Church. We pray for Phil’s better health following tests on his heart and also for the country and schools of Bangladesh where not only the virus but severe floods have devastated parts of the country. We remember before you the Proctors’ colleagues in the BMS office in Dhaka: for good health and wellbeing.
And we conclude with further words from the poem:
Open your heart
To let God’s light and mercy flood in.
To trust that gracious will.
Breathe deeply of His peace,
Willing to be light in the darkness…
And go with love and courage into the day
Amen

RBC prayer for the NHS – Sunday, 25th October 2020

Responsive prayer:
Leader: Father, hear our prayer
All: Lord, hear our prayer
Heavenly Father, we pray for all who work in health care throughout the world and especially remember before you those struggling with inadequate facilities and protective equipment.

Leader: Father, hear our prayer
All: Lord, hear our prayer
We pray, especially for those who work in the National Health Service in this country. We commend them to you for your protection and support. Inspire and sustain them in all that they do.

Leader: Father, hear our prayer
All: Lord, hear our prayer
Encourage all health service workers in our hospitals, care homes, GP practices and emergency services. Give them strength when they are fatigued. In particular we remember…(In the quiet of your heart, lift to the Lord the name of any health service worker known to you.)

Leader: Father, hear our prayer
All: Lord, hear our prayer
Father, grant to us all relief from this pandemic and the grace to bear our suffering through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

A prayer of confession

We confess before you, O God, that we are not always a good example of what it is to be a Christian. We do not feel worthy that others should follow us. And yet, Lord, you encourage us to share your love and reveal your truth and lead others to you. We confess that we fail, and we are sorry. We confess our inadequacies and carelessness in standing up for what is right against what is wrong. Forgive us, Lord, and guide us in the ways of truth and justice. We want to be a good example, a shining example of what it means to be a Christian, a follower of Jesus.
Amen

A prayer of praise

We praise you, Lord, for witnesses through the ages who have told your story and made you real to the next generation. We thank you for people whose names are well known and prominent, and we thank you for those whose names are long lost in the annals of history – but who are known to you. We praise you for all whose good Christian lives have impacted on who we are, and what we are, and where we are. We praise you that in every generation there are witnesses who stand out, who stand up to be counted, who make a difference to the Christian path. We praise you, Lord God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, that we have been brought by word, by deed, by action to follow you.
Amen

Prayers of intercession

Lord God, in our corner of the world it isn’t easy to really feel the pain of persecution for our faith, but we know that it happens. We pray for those who are persecuted and punished, violated and scarred because of their faith. We pray for those who despite these things speak out and speak up, and witness to you, the living God. We pray for the families of these people that they may be given strength and support in their own faith and discipleship. We pray for those who teach us of you, who unpack your truths, who explain what living a Christian life is and how to follow you. We pray for those who guide us in times of struggles with our faith, those who stand by us in times of denial and bewilderment. We pray for those who are dying in the faith, and those who are struggling to find their faith before they die. For these and all your witnesses, Lord, we pray.
Amen

beyond these walls.
Amen

So often we are overwhelmed by our own problems that we forget to look out for others.

Prayers of intercession

So often we want to pray for others.
But sometimes, God, we don’t know how.
We can’t remember names or numbers;
other issues weigh heavily on our hearts.
Thank goodness, God,
that you know what we mean when we pray.
So, we bring in this moment
those names and faces, images and desires for others
that pop in and out of our minds throughout the day:
the old lady at the bus stop who needed a hand up the step;
the young mum at the checkout trying to contain her four kids;
the chap up the road who’s lost his dog and is calling for him;
the teachers struggling to understand the needs of those in their class;
the doctors who wants to give us more time but who simply can’t;
the young families who can’t make ends meet;
those without work, who can’t find new jobs;
those helping people to find work, knowing it is an uphill struggle;
those with mental health issues and seeking help,
or who are afraid and ashamed to seek help,
or who are ignored and can’t get help.
So, God, for all these people and countless others,
we offer our prayers.
We know you do not need reminding,
but you do need willing workers – even us –
to help them know your love and have their needs met.
Hear our ramblings, O God.

Prayers of intercession

God of one and God of all, we pray for:
those who don’t know who they are,
who can’t understand themselves or their place in society –
God of all, we pray for them.
Those who don’t ‘fit in’,
who are or seem to be different –
God of all, we pray for them.
Those who don’t know where they come from,
their heritage or home, their family or bloodline –
God of all, we pray for them.
Those who feel lost and isolated, confused and afraid,
rudderless or homeless, strangers in a strange land –
God of all, we pray for them.
Those who wish they were someone else,
or somewhere else, in some other time and place –
God of all, we pray for them.
In your great mercy, Lord,
hear our prayers and grant surer journeys for them all.

Song – To be a pilgrim

Closing prayer

Almighty God, we are going on a journey,
from church back to (wherever it may be).
But we also go on another journey:
the journey of our Christian life.
Its foundations, full of all that has gone before,
are part of the scaffold of our lives.
Some of it can be seen by others,
some only by ourselves;
some is very obvious,
some more hidden.
But it is there. It is a personal journey
– no one else’s is quite the same
– but you know it and you know all of us,
and we trust you to guide us,
to give us the strength, the courage and the persistence we need
to follow where you lead even if the path is tough.
Be our guide, we pray.
Amen
