Call to worship

Come! Why so sad?
Wipe away your tears. He is risen!
Let us celebrate! Hallelujah!
Christ the Lord is Risen today!
He is risen indeed. Hallelujah!

A gathering prayer

Risen Lord,
in the stillness and wonder of this moment,
we hardly dare to believe that you are indeed alive!
Yet our hearts are filling with faith, hope and love,
and our souls are beginning to believe!
Wonderful Lord, we fall on our knees with thanksgiving.

Amen.

Prayers of intercession

Lord God, our hearts fill with joy today at the most wonderful news ever: Jesus is alive! We thank you for all the signs of life that we see around us: sunshine, blossom on the trees, baby birds and animals, buds peeping through the ground; new life is blooming everywhere. Thank you for the smell of spring, the warmer days, the lighter nights all pointing towards the regeneration that comes from you.

Yours is the glory; risen, conquering Son.
Endless is the victory over death you’ve won.

Lord Jesus, thank you that you went to the cross for us. Thank you that you love us so much that you willingly suffered all the pain and horror so that we might have a relationship with God. We rejoice that the curtain of separation was torn in two as you died, reconciling us to God. Thank you for love beyond measure. For us.

Yours is the glory; risen, conquering Son.
Endless is the victory over death you’ve won.

Thank you, Lord, for the tremendous victory of the resurrection. Thank you for the hope, the joy, the fulfilment, the everlasting life that your rising brings. Words cannot fully express the amazing triumph of that silent moment in the garden when you once again began to breathe.

Yours is the glory; risen, conquering Son.
Endless is the victory over death you’ve won.

Lord, we thank you for signs of resurrection in our own lives: perhaps something new learnt, a chance for rest and relaxation, a new job, a new member of the family, a recovery. There are so many ways that you bring new growth into our lives. We pause now to thank you for special times that we have recently experienced…

Yours is the glory; risen, conquering Son.
Endless is the victory over death you’ve won.

Lord Jesus, as the women came to the tomb in sorrow, their eyes full of tears, we are aware of so much sorrow still in our world. We lift to you now all the places where conflict exists – between nations, between factions, between families, between partners.
We bring to you our suffering planet: where the beauty you have created is being squeezed by humanity’s selfishness and greed.
We bring to you all those who are in pain: those we know and love who are sick, full of sorrow, loneliness or despair. Lord, we deeply desire that your resurrected presence will fill those people and places of pain and redeem them, bringing the new life that is so dearly needed. Touch every heart with your eternal love, filling each seemingly hopeless situation with the promise of resurrected, everlasting hope.

Yours is the glory; risen, conquering Son.
Endless is the victory over death you’ve won.

Lord, the news of your rising was so amazing that even your closest friends struggled to believe it at first. We pray for all those we know who struggle to believe and trust in you. We ask you to help them ponder the evidence, just like Peter did, and to think seriously about what they see. Help us to show them, by our joy at your resurrection, that new life in Jesus is for everyone, for ever.

Yours is the glory; risen, conquering Son.
Endless is the victory over death you’ve won.

As we celebrate your victory, Lord, go before us this week into every situation we face. Give us new eyes to encounter your freshness and new life. Help us to remember that your resurrection is for ever, not just for one day. Thank you for being alive in us now. Breathe your Spirit into our hearts this week so that we may be faithful witnesses to all that you are and all that you have done.

Yours is the glory; risen, conquering Son.
Endless is the victory over death you’ve won.

Lord, on this most special of days, we once again say thank you with all of our being.
Thank you, Lord Jesus.

Amen

Psalm 118

Song - All glory ,laud and honour

A prayer of approach

Living God, we bring you our hosannas – for you are an almighty God.
We bring you our alleluias - for you are a wonderful God.
We bring you our dreams- for you are a faithful God.
We bring you our discipleship - for you are an encouraging God.
We bring you our hearts - for you are a loving God in whom we can trust.

Amen

A prayer of adoration

Lord of power and humility,
The crowd roared, their spirits soared –
For you were a king. Their king.
They longed for your rule, though you rode on a mule –
For you were a king. Their king.
And here today, as we worship under pray,
we adore you as king. Our king.

Amen

Bible Reading - Luke 19 vv 28-40

Luke 19 vv 28-40

A prayer of confession

We are sorry, Lord Jesus, for the moments when our hosannas are loud but lacking in love, when we chase the lure of worldly power, but miss the signs of heavenly glory; when we choose popularity over integrity, when we would silence those who speak the truth, and are silent when we could speak out. Forgive us and inspire our steps as we follow you to the cross and beyond.

Amen

A prayer of assurance of forgiveness

God of all that is, your power is both mighty and vulnerable, and you both judge and forgive. Your son is both king and servant, and he both teaches and serves. You hear our words and you understand our silence and you both accept and inspire. Loving God, thank you for this day, for this journey, and for your son who draws us closer to you.

Amen

A prayer of praise

Lord Jesus, you journeyed to Jerusalem many times, as a child and as a man, touching many lives along the way as you taught and healed and challenged. Thank you for inviting us to journey with you today, for showing us the depth of your courage under the power of your love. Thank you, Lord, for being a king and saviour and our friend. You are worthy of all our praise.

Amen

Prayers of Intercession

We think first of all the good things around us and the blessings we have received this week using the following refrain:

Leader: Lord, we long to live thankfully
All: Help our thanks to pour out.

Lord, we thank you for all the goodness we have seen around us this week: for kindness of friends and strangers; for signs of spring bursting forth in our gardens, parks, fields and hedgerows; for sunshine and warmth. We thank you for friends to play with and food to eat.

We think, in silence, of a particularly special moment this week and thank you.

Lord, we long to live thankfully
Help our thanks to pour out.

Lord, we thank you for moments of busyness this week and moments of calm. We thank you for all those people who have crossed our path this week. We thank you for unexpected moments of goodness and joy, even in the midst of pain.

Lord, we long to live thankfully
Help our thanks to pour out.

Lord, we thank you for our favourite food, our favourite games and toys, our favourite music, our favourite books and hobbies. We thank you for all the good things in our lives that we take for granted sometimes. Help us to see the worth and value in everything and everyone.

Lord, we long to live thankfully
Help our thanks to pour out.

We turn our thoughts and prayers now to the needs of the world around us, both far away and close at hand. Using the following refrain:

Lord, we long to live lovingly.
Help our love to pour out.

Lord, we continue to cry out to you for Ukraine. We thank you for those who are trying to work for peace. We pray for all who have been displaced from their homes, asking that they may find new life and love in unfamiliar places. We pray for those left behind, still living with the daily terrors of attack and not knowing what will happen next. We remember all those who have died, some of whom are known only to you.

Lord, we long to live lovingly.
Help our love to pour out.

We pray for girls in Afghanistan, once again refused an education. We pray that the Taliban will reverse its decision and listen to your voice, encouraging equality for everyone. We pray for all the places in conflict in our world, currently out of the headlines. Show us how we can help and support all those who need food, shelter and education to enable them to prosper.

Lord, we long to live lovingly.
Help our love to pour out.

We pray for our country, especially as the cost of living soars and all of us have to tighten our belts and make do with less. Show us how to support each other, even when we might be struggling ourselves. Give us a spirit of generosity and help us to be content with what we need rather than what we want. We pray for all who work in our foodbanks, our homeless hostels and our support networks. We remember all children in care and pray for those who work to find them permanent homes. We continue to lift to you all those who work in our health care system, as Covid still runs rife in our communities.

Lord, we long to live lovingly.
Help our love to pour out.

We also pray for all the communities we are part of: where we live, our church, our schools, places of work and our homes. Give us joyful hearts and generous spirits, so that we give our best to others. We remember all who are ill or sad at this time and all who are anxious or housebound.

Lord, we long to live lovingly.
Help our love to pour out.

Finally, Lord, we commit the week ahead to you. We ask that you travel with us in our work, our play, our joys and sorrows. Help us to find space to breathe your fragrance and offer ourselves and all we have to you for you to make whole, strong and beautiful.

Lord, we long to live with you with thankfulness and love.
We ask you to pour out your blessings
So that we can pour them out to others.

Amen

Amazing God,
we are so thankful for the gift of being alive!
May our thankfulness to you pour out in our actions,
in our choices, in our dealings with other people,
in all that we do.
